Chapter One:

Nkem walked into her first class of the semester with a feeling of both excitement and trepidation. She had always dreamed of studying abroad, of immersing herself in a new culture and exploring new ideas. Now, she was finally here at the University of Rome, ready to begin her journey.

As she took her seat in the crowded classroom, she couldn't help but feel a sense of disorientation. The faces around her were unfamiliar, the accents foreign. She wondered if she would ever truly fit in here, if she would ever find her place.

Lost in her thoughts, Nkem almost didn't notice the guy who sat down next to her. He was tall and lean, with tousled brown hair and a friendly smile. He introduced himself as Marco, an Italian studying literature.

Nkem was surprised to find herself drawn to him, to his easy confidence and the way he spoke so passionately about the books they would be studying that semester. They chatted amicably for a few minutes, exchanging pleasantries and small talk. Nkem felt a flutter in her stomach, something she hadn't felt in a long time.

As the professor began his lecture, Nkem tried to focus on the material, but her mind kept wandering back to Marco. She found herself stealing glances at him, watching the way he leaned forward intently, the way his eyes lit up when he talked about his favorite authors.

After class, they walked out together, continuing their conversation. Marco told her about his favorite local spots to eat and drink, and Nkem felt a thrill of excitement at the prospect of exploring the city with him.

As they parted ways, exchanging numbers and promising to stay in touch, Nkem couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for what lay ahead. She didn't know what the future held, but she knew that she had met someone special, someone who made her feel alive again.

Little did she know, Marco felt the same way.
