Chapter 14:

Marcus's P.O.V

How long have you and the other godling been lovers, Antony asked yet another intrusive question as I took a quick water break.

The trip was taking longer than expected.

My cheeks heated up. I don't know what you're talking about. Firstly, don't say lovers. It's weird. Secondly, we're not together... at least I don't think we are, I explained trying to keep my emotions at bay.

You do not know! Was a couple of nights ago not confirmation enough? Antony bemused.

I huffed in frustration. Boy was he chattier now that he wasn't trying to kill me. Annoyingly, he reminded me of my boss Gaius. Both of them knew how to get on my nerves.

It's happened before, I confessed. I thought it would lead to something then but after we'd continued as normal and I was never sure if she saw me as anything beyond a friend–

I stopped before I could continue. There was no way I was discussing my relationship issues with Mark Antony. One of the greatest Roman figures in history and here we were talking about our love lives.

You are a pathetic godling.

"Says you, Mr-I-can't-stop-talking-about-Cleopatra."

Watch what you say. The guards you are with, may work for Brutus. They will report this back to Julius.

And so, this entire time I've been talking to myself... you never thought to mention that.

I apologize.

I rolled my eyes and sat down as I pulled out a papyrus and ink pot. Anyway, what about your relationship? Julius must know. So why the secrecy? I asked, inking my pencil.

Cleopatra keeps the guards and servants well-bribed and her spies well-hidden.

I stopped writing. Wait, so Julius doesn't know and I've been lingering around Thea like a fucking puppy! Not... not that I am obvious about my feelings. I am as stoic as can be.

You are worse than Phoebes in your pursuit of Thea.

Whatever, I grumbled as I continued. I felt Antony's curiosity peek.

Are we writing another letter for Thea?

I smiled to myself as I read over it, ignoring Antony's teasing. Even though I could not send it to her, the letter kept me focused. I had to get us home and I would as long as I remembered her.

'Dearest Thea'

I read the letter one more time before placing it into my satchel with the other three.

'Wait for me just a little longer, my love.'
