Middle Earth is a huge place, and a world that is even bigger than the books or movies explored.  I guess it's why I love it - the mystery and intrigue of such a vast and changeable Earth.  It's histories are stunning and its geography often hard to imagine.  So, as part of my books and alternative world set up I wanted to create this Index as a reference for you guys - my varied and wonderfully unique readers.    Again, it's more of a helpful tool for those of you who aren't familiar with the canon works, but also for the seasoned fans to help elaborate on my subtle additions.

Greenwood the Great is the historical name for the forest known in canon as 'Mirkwood'.  It is a massive expanse of supernatural forest that takes up a chunk of the Middle Earth map (above).   In the days before its darkening it was revered as an enchanted place filled with all manner of stunning birds and beasts.   It was bright - like a wood on acid, with succulent flora, ancient trees, and wild rivers, but importantly (in my alternative vision) it has a spiritual heartbeat connected to the very roots of creation.

The Woodland Realm and The King's Halls

Nestled in the North of Greenwood lies the Silvan held 'Woodland Realm' with the great cavern structures of the King's Halls - a magnifucuent underground Elven city. This is the main hub of elven activity in the forest, the sanctuary, and capital of the Silvan, Avari, and Sindar races. It is the seat of the King and home to the royal and noble families. The Halls themselves are beautiful structures built into the roots of the forest world. The outside seeming to melt into the caves, which are bright and airy, and filled with light and rustic song.

Dotted around the western and South Western eaves of the forest are the settlements of men - Woodsmen.   Possibly linked to the skin-changers but not fully discussed in this alternate world.
The settlements are primitive, consisting of a main hall, stores, and small, timber framed, dwellings that house full families.  Chieftains rule the villages, with their main sources of trade being in agriculture and hinting.
There is occasional trade and forced friendship between the woodland elves and the mortal woodsmen, but usually only for the purposes of intelligence and aid during times of heightened tension.

Imladris
aka Rivendell

Construction on the elven colony of Imladris has only recently began under the guidance and planning of Lord Elrond - the High King Gil-galad's appointed regent

Construction on the elven colony of Imladris has only recently began under the guidance and planning of Lord Elrond - the High King Gil-galad's appointed regent.
The hidden valley is the perfect location for the fair city, which remains open to all free peoples of Middle Earth (unlike other Elven strongholds). With Elrond's strong influence over the design and politics of the newly emerging colony, it is hoped that it will be a prominent political and highly intellectual place. With enviable protection of the vale in which it sits, the wisdom and insight of the predominantly Noldor cultural influence, and the home of one of Arda's most renowned healer's, it is no surprise that it is fast becoming a beacon of hope and sanctuary among the free races of Arda.

Mentioned briefly in the writing's of this series of books, Lindon is the collective name given to the stretches of the Elven Kingdom ruled by the legendary King Gil-galad - last of the High King's of the Noldor.
Lindon is located on what was left of Ossiriand and the peninsula of Beleriand after the 'War of Wrath'.  It was separated by the Gulf of Lune into two regions - Forlindon to the north and Harlindon to the South.  Forlindon was ruled by Gil-Galad with the Noldor influence and culture, whilst Harlindon was the predominantly Sindarin colonised by Lord Cirdan and a majority of Doriath survivors. - presumably Harlindon is the region that the infamous 'Grey Havens' 9f the Third Age, is found.
Harlindon is significant to this story, due to its fragile and contentious history with Greenwood, after the disastrous marriage between Prince Thranduil of Greenwood and The Lady Bregeth from the House of Bregon of Harlindon.  The dissolved marriage and the embarrassment of the failed alliance only left a bitter taste between the two Kingdoms.
