Wayne's POV

Clara marched off to her room. I stalked her from the hallway. A craving set right at my chest and before I indulged into it, I turned around and went back inside my room.

My heart hammered and a thought—a question crossed my mind. What if I did? What if I got feelings for her? There weren't many she-wolves I spoke with on daily basis. The only thing I did with them was sleep, dump and repeat.

By morning, the gut-twisting thought had disappeared and I was forced awaken by Magnus, the dealer of rogues. He came to my room early and with a shocking revelation. The sun wasn't even out yet and I had to drag myself downstairs.

The foul scent of a rogue angered my wolf. "You better have a good reason to bring this filth into my house." A rumbling left my chest as I went the down the stairs.

Magnus took me the lounge and closed off any doors before anyone else came wondering inside. It was a danger itself to bring a rogue to this house but according to him, this was important and it needed to be reviewed right away.

"We captured this rogue far off south. Two nights ago. He has been down since then. We got him in his human body but when he shifted earlier today, we found something." Magnus said, crouching down on one knee with a flash light in his hands.

The wolves that were kicked out of their packs or had left weren't allowed to shift without immense pain. It was a sort of punishment from the nature. If they did shift, they couldn't revert until a few days, sometimes weeks or even longer. It took a lot of power and strength for them to become who they truly were and then back.

Rogues didn't function like pack wolves.

They could never.

The rogue Magnus showed me was inside a wolf-like cage, made up of steel. It had thick bars to prevent these prisoners from escaping. The rogue was on it's side, forced to sleep.

"Check this." Magnus whispered, excitement in his voice as he turned the paws of the rogue around and showed me it's skin.

It took me a second. He flashed the light over the paw and I understand. "He has no claws." I bent further down and my brows furrowed together. It didn't make any sense.

"The claws have been cut off. You can find a little smear of blood on the ends." He continued before pushing his hand in and pointing out his theory.

"So?" I looked at him with a frown. Was this all? Was this the only reason I was forced awake from my sleep?

"The claws—Alpha, the claws contain their venom. When a rogue strikes at a pack wolf and gashes then, what happens?" He asked me.

"The pack wolf gets bruised and he isn't able to shift for days because a rogue's scratch is poisonous, deadly if one is too weak to bear it." I stared out at the wide paw of the rogue resting in front of me.

Rogues were lethal. Especially to a pack wolf. They were dangerous to themselves and the others that's why they had to be killed or turned into a pack wolf.

It came to me slow but it did. "Someone has stolen their claws and the venom they bring along with themselves. It wasn't one your men for sure. It's someone else." Magnus continued, turning the flash light to me.

I grabbed the light from his hand before it blinded me for life and moved away. "Get me another rogue," I ordered. "And take this one into confinement. When he's awake, question him and until then no one can know about this. Not a single soul, Magnus."

"Yes, Alpha." He nodded.

Someone had been fucking around, creating tension in my town, fucking with the rogues from the lands nearby but the question still stood. What were they planning to do?

I called upon a meeting early in the morning, making a few more arrangements before the party. We finally knew what to look for. It wasn't a rogue or something else that had entered out territory, it was a rat. A nasty rat who had been working on his own for something big, possibly something dangerous. Stolen rogue claws only meant that.

"I want a name by the end of Friday evening." I couldn't tell what we were fighting against by but once the party was over, I would know more.

Magnus had reported three more rogues and their claws missing while I was still in the meeting with the other pack-wolves. It was taking a wild turn and I could only think of one thing. Someone was trying to kill someone—or maybe a few people.

After the meeting ended, I left my office and went outside with the intentions of getting some fresh air but my breath was snatched away when I ran into Clara. My heart yanked hard inside my chest and I stopped on my tracks to deal with the morning glory.

She gave me a strained smile. "I slept for way too long, didn't I?" My path ended right there, right where Clara was standing.

She had a bag over her shoulders. Her hair, tamed from the front but unmade from the back. She seemed like she had overworked herself in the past few minutes, trying to get up and head for school even though I asked her to not worry about it. School wasn't important here.

A sharp breath escaped my lips. I contained myself. "There's no hurry. Come have breakfast with me," I offered. "I have some news." It took a sudden second to change the emotions I had felt the entire morning. The anger, the confusion—it was all just gone.

"But—" I didn't give her a chance to stall.

"But nothing. Your classes can wait." I replied in a gruff voice before taking her hand and leading her downstairs.

It was late. The wolves living in the house had already left by the time I had reached for breakfast so it was just me and Clara. Perfect. Just as I wanted it to be. No one interrupted us. Although, one of the other omegas did glare at Clara for long until I snapped my fingers at her and only then she stopped and scurried away.

"Have you decided to take a test yet?" I questioned, folding my hands across the table while she ate.

"I was thinking of waiting for another week but I am keeping a check on my cycle. You'll know by the end of the month if you're going to become a Father or not." She gave her a wide smile while her cheeks turned into a light shade of red.

"I suppose I should go find some patience then."

"Oh, you have a lot!" She exclaimed. "No need to look for it."

A tenderness lingered inside me. I couldn't help myself but look at Clara for long. I struggled with pulling myself away from the temptations—to grab her face, meet with her lips and making this morning just a tad more brighter than it was.

Clearing my throat, I leaned back on my seat and while fiddling with the fork in my hands, I said. "I've decided to renounce your omega title at the party."

"Oh. So quick?" She looked up, meeting with my eyes. Hers turned bright with cheer.

"Yeah. Make sure your family is here."

"Of course. They'll be here!" Her smile stirred the emotions inside me further more.
